A space for Japanese (abroad) & anyone connected—81+ is a soft community space initiated by Japanese friends. It began from shared conversations about visibility, representation, and belonging—about how Japanese presence is often seen from outside, yet rarely spoken from within. 81+ is not only an organisation or project, but a room to gather, listen, exchange, and think together. We welcome anyone who feels connected to Japanese culture or simply curious about it, and we value the hybrid and diverse encounters that shape who we are. Our activities may take the form of gatherings, talks, reading sessions, workshops, or small collaborative events—sometimes artistic, sometimes not. What matters most is to create spaces of reflection, care, and cultural exchange.
What Several Waves does:
Several Waves is a non-profit association based in Basel. We initiate, support, and produce cultural and artistic projects that center collaboration, participation, and intersectionality. Our work brings together people across backgrounds, generations, and social positions—especially centering women, BiPOC, and underrepresented communities.
Our approach:
We work transdisciplinarily across performance, sound, spoken text, installation, video, and research. Our artistic processes are rooted in experimentation, dialogue, and mutual exchange—often exploring themes such as cultural identity, self-representation, and perception. Several Waves acts as both a platform and a producing structure, offering conceptual, structural, and production support for projects that challenge conventional formats and foster new forms of collaboration. We operate locally and internationally across theatres, exhibition spaces, and public contexts.
